We had just finished eating dinner. The sun had set, but it was still light out. Suddenly Eric looked out the window and said, “Look, fireflies! Come on, Judy, let’s go on the deck.” I thought of potential mosquitoes (what if they bit me on the right hand?), but I decided to go anyway. Eric pushed me so that we could get there quickly, and then we were on the deck. I sat on the wheelchair, and Eric staid up.
It was the threshold between day and night. The moon shone far up in the sky, a thin crescent of light. I looked down on the grass and saw three soft spots of light take off from the grass and quickly fade out. I didn’t notice what was going on around me; the view was mesmerizing. I held Eric’s hand and we stood still, our eyes fixed.
I didn’t want to go, but didn’t want to get beaten either. So, I asked Eric to push me inside. Eric did, and then helped me through all the nightly routine steps. I started meditating. Soon I was falling asleep, the lights still flickering in my mind.
